Susie’s Blog: Butterfly Kisses

If you like butterflies, you’ll love Naples. Butterflies pop up year-round, delicate in appearance yet tough enough to withstand torrential rains and gusty breezes. Some names are gorgeous and suit these ethereal creatures: Zebra Long Wing (Florida’s state butterfly), Painted Lady, Tawny Emperor, Queen, Viceroy, Zebra Heliconian, Red Admiral, Julia Pearl Crescent or White Peacock.

Others, not so much. The folks responsible for naming some varieties must have been low on caffeine or argued with their spouse that morning before sticking some fragile, powdery winged creation with a moniker such as American Snout, Gray Hairstreak, Carolina Satyr or Orange Sulphur.

How could anyone be small-minded enough to diss a butterfly?
