The locals are very good at playing freeze tag in SWFL. A dusty colored bird blends into the bark of a tree. Against a background of dark mulch, a velvety brown rabbit remains motionless. Lizards, secure in their camouflage, melt into invisibility beside stones. Insects flit to blades of grass and then suspend all motion until they appear part of the landscape.
Animals, birds and insects understand a vital concept that we humans have yet to master in life’s game of tag: When danger threatens, don’t move–instead of just being “it”, you might wind up dead.
