At Ulee’s Refuge, tiny spotlights attached to the bases of trees highlight the foliage. These lights remain on until the sun has fully illuminated the apartment complex.
I’ve noticed, however, in the early hours that most of the light surfaces feature a basking anole. Reptile bodies are outlined in the projected beam just like a miniature Bat signal. Some of the spotlights blink blue and white and I wonder if the anole’s heartbeat changes to match the pulse of light.
The warmth attracts anoles to nestle on the lights, unaware that they aren’t camouflaged, but instead spotlighting themselves for the benefit of potential predators.
People instinctively take the same action–they cuddle against other humans, unaware that the warmth may actually serve as their downfall.
